Resume and Curriculum vitae are viewed as presentation of the candidate's potential to a certain task. Resumes and Cvs are both used in job applications, as it is indeed a fact they both carry the same weight in the recruitment process. However the main different between resume and CV is that resume is brief summary of a Curriculum Vitae , While CV is a very much detailed document containing more than one page,resume is always one page. Resume and Curriculum Vitae should include all the right details and relevant informations that should make the recruiter or rather human resource managers think at a glance that you are a strong candidate for jobs.
Information that should be include in a CV
Although, it has been found that Cvs carries different method and types depending on the job being applied for, profession, level of education and creativity therein information is mandatory in a CV.
Personal details – This is always information starting at front page, as employer need to general detail about you. This details include: Names,contacts and address,date of birth,nationality,religion and many other relevant information. This section is always titled bio – data as it give biographical details.
Education and qualifications – This includes names of institutions , dates attended in reverse order, result of the study and other formal training.
Work experience. This is the most important part in a modern CV,most employer are very much keen in this section and should be always concise and well explained . Career history is presented in reverse order I.e starting with most recent place of work/company. It is advisable to indicate achievements and responsibilities made on the course of working.
Skills . This Include computer skills, a foreign language ,driving and other import trade relevant to the job being applied for.
Hobbies and Interests – They are always in listed with no explanation
Referees - Most of the time three references are provided, always note they should not be family members.
However the following guideline should be adhered to when writing your CV:
- The CV should be free from errors and spelling mistakes
- Contact information should be clear at the first page of the CV
- Your CV should be typed – with the headlines highlighted or underlined so as to
catch the attention of the reader
- Write your CV work experiences chronologically- i.e. starting with current employer
- Your qualifications should be presented clearly and concisely starting with the highest qualifications achieved to the lowest.
- Give at least 3 unrelated references (make sure you do inform the referees that you have mentioned them in the CV)
- Do not forget to write your personal interest and as hobbies as they important just like your academics etc
- Include additional skills in CV. Like foreign languages,computer skills,driving etc even if which do not fall in the job being applied for.
It fundamental to note that a well written CV should include all information that an employer has mention on the jobs advert and criteria too to be met. Knowledge, skills,work experience and education should be the body of your CV and more emphasis should is encouraged as Prioritizing what is most important catches the attention of the employer. Always choose an attractive style which means simplicity and avoid unnecessary content, right font style is also important.
